做好习语题才能笑傲考场拿高分！历年真题中的习语题（七）

小白老师说：习语是全国医学博士英语考试的必考内容，每年都有考到。考生在习语上的匮乏，在考试中表现出来就是“每个词都认识，可就是读不懂或听不懂”。如果你觉得习语让你头痛，那可能是还没有发现其中的乐趣。普通的一段英文对话，加入了习语，就会像段子般有趣有料，值得细品。今天来就和大家聊聊和 shoe （鞋子）有关的习语。

这是一则短对话听力，原文如下：

Question 6

W: If you see he is your brother, that’s another pair of shoes. I suppose you can rely on him to help you. 如果你明白他是你的兄弟，那就另当别论了。我想你可以依靠他来帮助你。

M: I know, but I feel ashamed to ask for his help. 我知道，但是我羞于向他求助。

W: Don’t think that way. He is your dear brother! 别那么想。他是你的亲兄弟。

M: OK, I’ll call him tonight. 好吧，我今晚给他打电话。

Q: What will the man probably do? 男士可能会做什么？

选 项：

A. To buy another pair of shoes. 再买一双鞋子。

B. To help his brother right away. 立刻帮助他的兄弟。

C. To turn to his brother for help. 向他的兄弟求助。

D. To seek advice for the woman. 为女士寻求建议。

分 析：

对话中，男士表示羞于向兄弟求助，而女士一直在鼓励他，最后男士决定接受女士的建议，晚上就给他的兄弟打电话。所以正确答案是C。

这个对话中出现了习语 that’s another pair of shoes，字面意思为“那是另外一双鞋子”，而在这个对话中，根据语境，则是“另当别论”的意思。选项A就是利用对话中这句话出了一个干扰项。还是那句话，单词和短语一定要放在上下文中来理解。

这是一则短对话听力，原文如下：

M: How do you feel after the surgery? It seems that you’ve got a rebirth, right? 你手术后感觉怎么样？是不是重获新生的感觉？

W: I’m sorry, doctor. Honestly, I think the shoe is on the other foot. 抱歉啊医生，说实话，我感觉恰恰相反。

Q: What does the woman mean? 女士是什么意思？

A. The opposite to the man’s expectation. 与男士的期望相反。

B. A quicker recovery than expected. 康复比预期的要快很多。

C. A pair of mismatching boots. 一双不相匹配的靴子。

D. Her healthy pregnancy. 她健康的孕期。

分 析：

对话中女士所说的“ I think the shoe is on the other foot. ”就是考点所在。

The shoe is on the other foot. 是一个常见的习语，字面意思是“把鞋子穿到另外一只脚上”，也就是穿反了鞋子，用来比喻完全相反的情况。所以正确答案应该选 A “The opposite to the man’s expectation.”

下面再给大家举个例子。比如，有个人在回忆自己20年前的同班同学Jones，他说：

“Back at school we all laughed at Jones because we thought he was stupid. Now the shoe is on the other foot—he’s made lots of money and we barely make enough to feed our families.”

从前在学校的时候我们都取笑Jones，因为我们觉得他很蠢。然而今非昔比，情况颠倒过来了，Jones 现在挣了大钱，而我们却相反只能勉强养家糊口。

从这段话中，我们闻到了一股酸酸的柠檬味——当初被大伙儿瞧不起的人，如今却出人头地比谁都强，可见“the shoe is on the other foot”意思是情况恰恰相反。

Seeing a doctor

W: Hello, Mr. Green. What can I do for you today?

M: Well, I’ve got this pain in my ear, a sore throat and keep losing my voice.

W: Do you think you have a cold?

M: Err, yes, yes, I do. Well, last night I got this throat and started getting hot.

W: Do you have a temperature? Have you taken it?

M: Yes. It’s thirty-nine.

W: Right. Let me have a little look. Open wide, Mm… Let’s have a look at this ear. Turn a little,

will you? Mm, mm, Uhhuh. That’s good. Right you are, Mr. Green.

M: Thank you, doctor.

W: You are off to home to bed for three days. By the way, take this to the chemist. Take it three

times a day after meals. Nothing to worry about. It will clear up quickly enough. All right then?

M: You always know where the shoe pinches. Thank you.

对话的最后一句里面的“where the shoe pinches”也是一个习语。pinch是个动词，意思是“戳、刺”。鞋子太紧，穿了脚痛，这种痛苦的经历可能人人都曾有过，“鞋子太小而轧脚”，在英语里就说where the shoe pinches。

Where the shoe pinches即“鞋子轧脚的地方”，加上where这个连接词，整个习语就成了一个从句了。当然，它的真正意思并不在于告诉别人自己的鞋子什么地方太紧，只不过是用鞋子的不适之处来比喻令人烦恼的不快之处，或者一个问题的症结所在。例如：

On the whole it is a nice flat. But we have to share the bath with another family. That’s where the shoe pinches.

总的来说，这层公寓不错，但我们要和另一家使用浴室，这是使人感到不快的地方。

He is quick to comprehend but he never gets very high marks. I think his carelessness is where the shoe pinches.

他理解很快，但分数从来不高。我看他的问题是粗心大意。

Considered individually, all the players are excellent, but they do not seem to team up so well. That’s where the shoe pinches.

单独来看，每位球员都是顶呱呱的，但他们配合得不理想，这是症结所在。

敲黑板：
